Justin Michener, PhD

Psychologist

Dr. Michener is a Licensed Psychologist with over a decade of experience providing psychological evaluation and psychotherapy to adolescents and adults, specializing in assessing and treating generalized anxiety, depression, and other mood disorders, as well as work and school difficulties. He has also worked extensively with teenagers and adults with ADHD, helping clients develop behavioral strategies to better manage symptoms of inattention, stay organized and on task, and minimize impulsive choices and behaviors. Dr. Michener recognizes and attends to the struggles with mood, anxiety, and self-esteem often experienced by individuals with ADHD.  He developed The ADHD Clinic for Adults & Emerging Adults as part of The ADHD Clinic at The Arete Center as a response to the growing number of teenage and adult clients seeking ADHD evaluations and support.

Dr. Michener has training and experience with Relational and Psychodynamic approaches to psychotherapy and with more contemporary and evidence-based, Cognitive-Behavioral interventions. These modalities are integrated such that treatment focuses on helping clients develop the skills to better manage their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors while recognizing the importance of establishing trust and relying on the strength of the relationship between the therapist and client to foster positive change.

Dr. Michener earned a master’s degree in Psychology in Education at Columbia University and a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at the Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology, Yeshiva University. He completed a Doctoral Internship and Post-Doctoral Fellowship at the Mount Sinai Adolescent Health Center in New York City. He has served as a leader in the field, having held faculty appointments and leadership positions at prominent universities and medical centers nationwide, including The University of Colorado School of Medicine and Children’s Hospital Colorado. Additionally, Dr. Michener has mentored and supervised countless Psychologists in training and has led or been part of numerous clinical training programs.

Dr. Michener is a member of APSARD (The American Professional Society of ADHD and Related Disorders).

Dr. Michener moved to the Denver area from New York with his wife and three children in 2016. The wonderful weather, family-friendly culture, and Dr. Michener’s mounting appreciation of the Denver craft beer and food scene have solidified them as permanent residents.
